HOLDING OF BAR EXAMS OUTSIDE MANILA PUSHED

University of Cebu (UC) Law Dean Baldomero Estenzo said holding the bar exam in Manila “prejudices candidates” residing in the Visayas and Mindanao because┬áthe cost of living in the capital is high.

The last day of the Bar Exams in Manila on September 2009 was postponed due to typhoon Ondoy. The floods forced a one week extension of the exam. Examinees from the provinces, with money enough for the four-week preparation, spent more for the one week extension that contributed to their anxiety.

Dean Estenzo said during the MCLE Seminar in Cebu that UC Banilad is being offered as venue, free of charge.

A petition is expected to be filed to urge the Supreme Court to hold bar examinations outside Metro Manila. Cebu is being pushed as a venue for the exams. This proposal is favorable to law graduates from Mindanao and Visayas. If realized, many law graduates would have ample opportunity and access in taking the bar exams.
